The Cinematic Greatness of Vienna
Vienna is the capital of Austria and has a long-standing tradition of theater, opera, music and fine arts. It is no wonder why the cinematic experience in Vienna is a vivid tale of history and current technology. Most cinema Vienna are located along Mariehilfer Strasse and more contemporary establishments are housed within shopping malls similar to those in The United States. However, for the more stylistic approaches to theatre, there are hundreds of majestic movie houses around the city that show an array of movies other than normal Hollywood releases. Although many of the foreign films are dubbed in German, you can still find some that subtitle the films in English for those who have traveled abroad.
Metro Kino
The Metro Kino in Vienna was established in 1924 in place of the Belle Epoque ballroom. Much of the original detailing from the original structure is still present making it one of the most unique buildings in the world. For example, the theatre is lined with dark wood paneling, crystal chandeliers and regal red velvet curtains reminiscent of more Victorian décor. This grandiose motif provides a magical experience for moviegoers and is known for hosting some of the most prestigious film festivals in Vienna. If you're able to visit this cinema during your trip to Vienna, you will not be disappointed.
Burg Kino
The Burg Kino is the only centrally located establishment that shows only English-language films and is perfect for those tourist looking for a little piece of home. The theaters range in size from small to very large and play classic American films from Orson Welles and other post WWII films. You can easily reach this cinema by means of public and private transportation making it an ideal theatre for tourists and locals alike.
Gartenbau Kino
The Gartenbau Kino is one of the favorite art-houses in Vienna and even Austria at large. In light of large mega-plex theatres, this theatre is a diamond in the ruff. This establishment has thick carpets, extraordinarily plush seats, wall sconces and a timeless elegance the modern structures could never match. The seating is well over 700 and the screen is very large in order to accommodate roaring crowds. This theatre is one of the oldest in Vienna and was completely refurnished in 1960 to redefine its classic splendor. This venue is the site of Vienna's annual international film festival that occurs during the fall. If you're feeling a bit conversational, this theatre has an in-house café in the foyer. This place is a traveler's delight and should definitely be sought out while in Vienna.
